From your first period through menopause and beyond, women’s unique health needs are best served through experienced and compassionate gynecological care. Gynecologists, sometimes called GYN doctors, and women's health nurse practitioners specialize in women’s health care. Many of the GYN practitioners at Penn Highlands Healthcare also practice obstetrics, which provides the specialized care women need during pregnancy.
The gynecology specialists of Penn Highlands Healthcare offer routine examinations and testing starting with adolescent GYN patients’ first well-woman visit. These may include clinical breast exams, Pap smears and HPV testing, as well as referrals for mammograms and other screenings.
What Types of Conditions Do Gynecologists Treat?
Gynecology providers are qualified to provide diagnosis and treatment for menstrual problems such as abnormal bleeding, pelvic floor disorders, and bladder concerns including frequent infections and incontinence. Many of our GYN physicians perform minor and major surgical procedures for endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, pelvic floor disorders, incontinence, and other GYN conditions.
For women of childbearing years, GYN doctors and nurse practitioners provide contraceptive and infertility counseling to help women plan successful pregnancies when they and their families are ready. And for those women who are dealing with perimenopause and menopause, our experts help with symptom management. Gynecology providers also work with women as they manage their health through senior years, with conditions such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and – in partnership with specialists – provide oversight of chronic conditions, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and prediabetes or diabetes.
Our GYN physicians also work closely with Penn Highlands cancer teams to provide diagnosis and treatment guidance for cancers of the reproductive system, including cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, and ovarian cancer.

Does Penn Highlands Offer Gynecological Surgery with the da Vinci® Xi Surgical System?
Penn Highlands Healthcare now uses the da Vinci® Xi Surgical System for certain types of gynecologic surgeries. da Vinci Robotic-Assisted Surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery where our specially trained surgeons use the da Vinci robotic-assisted surgical system to perform a wide range of delicate and complex operations. The da Vinci Xi System features a magnified 3D high-definition vision system and tiny wristed instruments that bend and rotate far greater than the human wrist. As a result, the da Vinci Xi System enables surgeons to operate with enhanced vision, precision, dexterity and control.
The primary, potential benefits of da Vinci Robotic-Assisted Surgery for patients include a shorter hospital stay, less blood loss, fewer complications, less need for pain medicines, a faster recovery and smaller incisions associated with minimal scarring.
