Outpatient Physical Therapy in Pennsylvania

The Rehabilitation Center

Rehabilitation medicine, including outpatient physical therapy, helps patients recover from illness, injury, and surgery or regain independence after experiencing disability. The rehabilitation specialists at Penn Highlands Healthcare are some of the most experienced in Pennsylvania.

We offer several types of rehabilitation therapy, including inpatient and outpatient physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. The Rehabilitation Center of Penn Highlands Healthcare also offers specialized services for all ages, conditions and abilities.

Helping Patients Regain Function

When people think of rehabilitation, they often think of outpatient physical therapy. But outpatient physical therapy is just one of many types of rehabilitation therapy offered at the Rehabilitation Center of Penn Highlands Healthcare.
The three main types of rehabilitation services include:

  • Physical therapy: use of specially designed exercises, equipment, and therapies that help patient regain or improve physical abilities
  • Occupational therapy: focuses on helping patients relearn or adapt skills and capabilities to perform activities of daily living
  • Speech therapy: helps restore cognitive (brain) function, speech and swallowing as well as helping children with language-related learning issues such as speaking, listening and writing.

Specialized Rehabilitation Therapy Services

Whether you need outpatient physical therapy to get back on the field after a football injury or speech therapy to regain speaking and swallowing abilities after a stroke, Penn Highlands rehabilitation therapy meets the needs of patients throughout central Pennsylvania. In addition to physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, Penn Highlands offers many types of specialized rehabilitation therapies to patients of all ages from childhood through seniors:

  • Inpatient physical therapy – rehabilitation therapy that takes place while a patient is in the hospital
  • Aquatic therapy – rehabilitation therapy performed in water that promotes muscle relaxation
  • Ergonomic consultations – a physical therapist visits a patient’s workplace to suggest workstation changes to enhance health and productivity
  • ImPACT testing – pre-concussion baseline testing for athletes at increased risk for concussion
  • Rehabilitation after concussions – therapy designed to help patients safely return to work, school and play after a concussion
  • Hand therapy – physical and occupational therapy specifically for patients with disorders of the fingers, hand, wrist or elbow
  • Pediatric feeding therapy – helping children learn to chew and swallow developmentally appropriate foods
  • Pelvic floor physical therapy – for the treatment of pelvic pain and dysfunction as well as urinary incontinence
  • Vertigo and vestibular treatment – designed to decrease dizziness and increase balance in patients with inner ear disorders
  • LSVT (Lee Silverman Voice Treatment) – therapy designed to slow the decline of motor and speech skills in patients with Parkinson’s disease
  • Massage therapy – pain relief through soft tissue manipulation

Conditions Treated at Penn Highlands Rehabilitation Center

Many types of patients can benefit from rehabilitation services and outpatient physical therapy. In general, rehabilitation therapies can be used to help patients:

  • Recover from surgery. Joint replacement surgery, spine surgery, and ACL knee surgery are just a few of the common types of surgery where rehabilitation therapy – particularly outpatient physical therapy – is used to help patients recover faster and achieve better post-surgery results.
  • Recover from illness or injury. Many health conditions from concussions to stroke can impact a person’s ability to function or think. Occupational therapy and speech therapy are two types of rehabilitation therapy that are particularly essential to regaining the ability to perform daily activities and restoring cognitive skills. In cases where a complete recovery is not possible, occupational and speech therapists help patients learn how to accommodate their limitations.
  • Treatments for orthopedic and spine pain. Joint and spine pain are some of the most common types of chronic pain, often due to osteoarthritis or other conditions that cannot be treated with pain medications or surgery. Rehabilitation therapy, particularly outpatient physical therapy, can effectively help to reduce pain by strengthening supporting muscles and tendons.
  • Injury prevention. Rehabilitation therapy – particularly outpatient physical therapy – is often used to help a person prevent injury, particularly to joints and muscles. Physical therapists help identify weakness that can lead to injury and then recommend specific exercises and therapies to help divert the problem from ever occurring.
  • Alleviate Pain – For men and women struggling with pelvic pain, discomfort and pain during intercourse or urinary incontinence, specialized pelvic floor physical therapy may help relieve the symptoms. Pelvic floor physical therapy is a non-surgical treatment to help care for pelvic floor dysfunction.

FAQs

What is physical rehabilitation?

Physical rehabilitation is a medical specialty devoted to helping patients recover from illness, injury or surgery and regain independence after experiencing disability. At Penn Highlands Healthcare, physical rehabilitation includes inpatient and outpatient physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. We provide physical rehabilitation services at more than 25+ locations throughout central Pennsylvania.

What is physical therapy?

Physical therapy is a method of rehabilitation most often used to help restore function and health in patients after surgery, injury or illness. Outpatient physical therapy also can help patients prepare for surgery, prevent an injury or treat a health condition such as Parkinson’s disease or pelvic floor dysfunction. Advanced physical therapy includes specialized services for amputees, stroke patients, joint replacement patients and others who have unique needs.

What is the difference between physical therapy and rehabilitation?

Physical therapy is one component of rehabilitation therapy that focuses on building function, strength and range of motion. Depending on your condition, needs and abilities, you may require only a single type of rehabilitation therapy or multiple types, including physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.

What is the difference between physical therapy and occupational therapy?

Physical therapy and occupational therapy are closely related specialties. Both can be used to help you regain function following an illness, injury or disability. While physical therapy focuses on building muscle strength and range of motion to help with physical activity, occupational therapy focuses on improving motor skills and relearning how to perform or adapt activities of daily living, such as getting dressed, preparing meals and personal hygiene rituals.

What exactly does a physical therapist do?

A physical therapist’s role is to help you prevent, treat or recover from an illness, injury or disability. Your physical therapist will work closely with your physician to create a plan to help you reduce pain, regain function, strengthen muscles and increase range of motion, so you can return to regular activity. He or she will do this by guiding you through supervised stretches and exercises and other techniques, such as aquatic therapy, massage, icing and taping.

What does a speech therapist do?

Speech-language pathologists, also called speech therapists, work with patients of all ages to overcome cognitive, communication and swallowing dysfunctions. These professionals use modeling, oral exercises, problem-solving activities and other techniques to help patients improve speech, language and swallowing abilities.

Will I need inpatient or outpatient physical therapy?

At all 25+ of our outpatient rehabilitation therapy centers, we provide a range of services for individuals of all ages. Specialty therapy is offered on an outpatient basis at certain locations. These therapies may include feeding therapy for young children, hand therapy, LSVT therapy for patients with Parkinson’s disease, pelvic floor therapy, aquatic therapy and a wheelchair clinic.

For those who need more intensive or frequent therapy to regain independence, we offer acute inpatient rehabilitation at Penn Highlands DuBois. Our acute inpatient rehabilitation therapy program uses a multidisciplinary approach to help patients recover from surgery, traumatic injury or a debilitating disease. Every member of our inpatient rehabilitation therapy team is highly trained and passionate about what they do—helping each patient regain independence and a better quality of life.

Does Penn Highlands offer outpatient physical therapy at home?

Yes. If you’re recovering from surgery or working to regain mobility after an injury or illness such as stroke, you could benefit from our in-home rehabilitation services. Our physical, occupational and speech therapists work with you in the comfort of your own home to meet your functional goals.

For home healthcare needs that require specialized knowledge and training, we offer Specialty Home Care Programs for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, congestive heart failure and diabetes.

Does physical therapy work?

Yes, physical therapy is a highly effective way to prevent, treat or recover from an illness, injury or disability. Patients who actively participate in physical therapy may even be able to reduce pain and avoid surgery in some cases. And those who adhere to a prescribed physical therapy program following joint replacement surgery have better range of motion and report better outcomes as compared with patients who do not complete physical therapy.

Can I do physical therapy on my own?

Physical therapy should be performed under supervision by a licensed physical therapist. The right exercises and proper form are key to restoring function, building strength and preventing further injury.
