Matthew A. Varacallo, MD, MBA, FAAOS
Matthew Varacallo, MD, Director of Orthopedic Robotic Surgery and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, is an board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and total joint reconstruction, accelerated rehabilitation protocols and functional return to sports after surgeries and procedures. During his Orthopedic Surgery Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Kentucky, Varacallo was on the team of physicians caring for the NCAA Division I Collegiate athletes and also worked as team physician for the 2019 NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship team at Georgetown College. Today, Dr. Varacallo is team physician/surgeon for the DuBois Dream in the North American Basketball League (NABL) and Premier Basketball League (PBL).
A native of DuBois, Varacallo and the Penn Highlands Orthopedics and Sports Medicine team work with athletes and athletic trainers from the region’s school districts (DuBois, Brockway, Brookville, Clearfield, and St. Marys), along with the DuBois Dream and Penn State DuBois.
Varacallo has engaged in extensive research investigating orthopedic outcomes, and his work has been featured in multiple articles in the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons journal, as well as the clinical information website Healio.com/Orthopedics Today. Since 2015, he has written or been featured in more than 250 publications covering topics related to orthopedics and sports medicine, joint reconstruction, anatomy, hand/upper extremity, and orthopedic education.
