Our sports medicine physicians serve as team physicians for programs ranging from high school to college athletics, including football, basketball, and swimming and diving, so young athletes get care from someone who already understands their sport. Dr. Shane Hennessy, one of our fellowship-trained sports medicine physicians, brings that team physician experience from collegiate and high school programs, as well as the PGA Tour.

From there, treatment might include injections, physical therapy, or, when it's truly necessary, minimally invasive surgery, always starting with the most conservative option that gives you a real chance to heal.
Preventing the next injury matters as much as treating this one. Our sports medicine doctors assess your strength, flexibility, balance, and movement to spot weaknesses that raise your risk of injury, then build a plan that may include physical therapy, taping, or targeted stretching. Many patients find that the same work also improves their performance.

Advanced Sports Medicine Care Close to Home
You don’t have to leave the region for some of the most current sports medicine care available. Matthew A. Varacallo, MD, MBA, FAAOS, medical director of Orthopedic Robotic Surgery at Penn Highlands Healthcare, helped pioneer the Fertilized ACL technique, which speeds healing of the bone tunnels created during ACL reconstruction to support faster recovery and lower the risk of reinjury. Our clinicians also developed an opioid-free ACL surgery protocol for young athletes, and our team recently contributed to national research on treatment for chronic hip tendon pain. At our Rostraver Township location, a dedicated pain management suite uses advanced C-arm imaging to guide spine and joint injections, offering a non-surgical option for some patients with ongoing pain.
