About Penn Highlands DuBois
Penn Highlands DuBois has a rich history providing top-quality healthcare to the Northwestern Pennsylvania region.
The hospital dates back to1897 when Doctor’s Hospital opened in a house on W. Scribner Avenue. In 1909, the 23-bed facility was damaged by fire. At that time the physicians asked the Sisters of Mercy from Erie to operate the hospital, and in 1910, the facility later known as the DuBois Hospital was under new management. On October 23, 1915, the Sisters opened a new building on Hospital Avenue. Meanwhile, three years earlier, in 1912, John E. DuBois, who was in the lumber business, offered $10,000 for a tract of land for development of a second hospital, which would be non-profit, non-sectarian and a community facility. On October 8, 1918, the hospital on Maple Avenue opened on that tract of land. Both hospitals served the medical needs of the DuBois area for decades before a merger in 1985 joined the two facilities as DuBois Regional Medical Center.
In 2007, DuBois Regional Medical Center entered into a management agreement with Brookville Hospital. Two years later, in 2009, Clearfield Hospital explored joining Brookville Hospital and DuBois Regional Medical Center.
In May 2011, Penn Highlands Healthcare was incorporated. In October, 2011, Brookville Hospital, Clearfield Hospital and DuBois Regional Medical Center joined Penn Highlands Healthcare. In February 2014, the hospitals’ names changed to reflect the health system and DuBois Regional Medical Center was renamed Penn Highlands DuBois.
In June 2018, a Master Facilities Plan was announced to modernize, improve and expand upon the facilities and services. As part of the plan, Penn Highlands DuBois East, the Maple Avenue facility that houses behavioral health, was renovated. The plan also included a new five-story annex at Penn Highlands DuBois on Hospital Avenue as well as a new state-of-the-art Emergency Department (ED) off of South Main Street. A three-story Center of Excellence building housing specialty clinics ranging from orthopedics and sports medicine to women’s health services was also constructed.
Penn Highlands DuBois has always been on the cutting edge of innovative therapies and services. For example, the hospital was the first in Northwestern/Central Pennsylvania to offer the Mako SmartRobotics surgery for total joint replacement surgery. In August 2023, Penn Highlands DuBois was accredited as a Level II Trauma Center by the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation. It is the only Level II Trauma Center in Northwestern Pennsylvania.
Penn Highlands DuBois continues to provide the residents of the region with access to outstanding physicians, exceptional care, advanced procedures and state-of-the-art facilities.
