An Effective Solution for Chronic Acid Reflux
Are You Living with Acid Reflux?
If you have suffered from acid reflux for an extended time, including symptoms such as heartburn, chronic cough, trouble swallowing, regurgitation and symptoms that are no longer well controlled with antacids, the TIF (transoral incisionless fundoplication) procedure at Penn Highlands can help you find relief.
What is the TIF Procedure?
TIF is a minimally invasive treatment for acid reflux. The procedure doesn’t require incisions, so there is no scarring and recovery is quick. During the procedure, the physician uses a specialized TIF device guided by an endoscope, a flexible tube-shaped instrument equipped with a camera that looks inside your body. Using this special device, the physician reconstructs the valve at the top of the stomach to prevent acid reflux. The procedure is performed through the mouth, so there are no incisions.
Who is a Good Candidate for the TIF Procedure?
- Patient with symptoms of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) and suboptimal control of symptoms on proton pump inhibitors
- Patients with mild to moderate anatomic abnormalities of the gastroesophageal junction valve function that require correction
- Patients who prefer an alternative treatment that does not involve long-term use of medication
What are the Benefits of the TIF Procedure?
- Minimally invasive
- No incisions or scars
- Most patients to return to work within a few days
- Fewer complications during and after surgery
- Reduced discomfort
