Lymphatic System Cancer Treatment

What is the best hospital for treating lymphoma in central Pennsylvania? Penn Highlands Healthcare cancer care centers off high-quality lymphoma care. Our highly trained hematologist oncologists specialize in treating cancers of the blood, bone marrow, and lymphatic system, including both Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Lymphoma Cancer Symptoms

Lymphoma accounts for about half of all blood cancer types diagnosed each year. As with other blood cancers, there is no screening test to look for lymphoma in people without symptoms. Symptoms of lymphoma in males and females are generally the same. However, if lymphoma is present in a reproductive organ, women may experience pelvic pressure or pain, abnormal uterine bleeding, or pain during intercourse.

Symptoms of lymphoma can often be non-specific, which means they could be caused by conditions other than lymphatic system cancer. Cancer is easier to treat the earlier you catch it, so talk to your doctor if you feel persistently unwell with the following lymphoma cancer symptoms:

  • Swollen, painless lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, or groin
  • Fever
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Weight loss
  • Night sweats
  • Difficulty breathing or chest pain
  • Itchy skin or rash

With non-Hodgkin lymphoma, you might have a cough, as well as abdominal pain, swelling, or a feeling of fullness in the abdomen.

How is Lymphoma Cancer Found and Treated?

To evaluate lymphoma cancer symptoms, your doctor will start with a physical exam and a health history. A lymph node biopsy is used to diagnose lymphoma, followed by other tests to determine the stage and spread of the cancer. These can include blood tests, bone marrow biopsies, and imaging tests.

For lymphoma treatment, you will be referred to one of Penn Highlands hematologist oncologists. These oncology doctors will develop a customized treatment plan for your condition, which may include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation, and stem cell transplantation. Your hematologist oncologist will be your main doctor throughout the treatment process.

Along with the size and stage of the cancer, your age, health, and preferences will help your care team recommend the treatment plan that is right for you. No matter what type of lymphoma treatment you need, rest assured you won’t have to leave central Pennsylvania to get it. Penn Highlands offers exceptional cancer care right in your own backyard.

FAQs

Where does lymphoma usually start?

Because lymph tissue is located in many places in the body, lymphoma can start almost anywhere. Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpit, or groin can be a symptom of lymphoma cancer. Other major sites of lymph tissue include the:

  • Spleen
  • Bone marrow
  • Thymus (small organ behind the upper breastbone)
  • Adenoids and tonsils
  • Digestive tract

What is the difference between Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma?

Both types of lymphoma are named after the scientist who discovered them. In Hodgkin lymphoma, a certain large cell type called Reed-Sternberg cells are found in the lymph fluid.

Hodgkin lymphoma tends to develop in the lymph nodes of the neck, chest, or underarms and move predictably from one group of lymph nodes to the next. It is more common in young adults ages 15 to 40. The incidence rises again after age 55, but the average age of a Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis is 39.

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is most commonly found in people over 60. It arises in various parts of the body, so it can be harder to detect than Hodgkin lymphoma. Since it refers to any type of lymphoma that does not involve Reed-Sternberg cells, there are actually more than 60 subtypes of NHL.

What are causes lymphoma cancer?

Doctors don’t know an exact cause for lymphoma, but you are at higher risk if you are male, Caucasian, or older than 60. Having an autoimmune disease or a weakened immune system—from factors such as HIV/AIDS or taking immunosuppressant medication after an organ transplant—can also increase risk. A family history of lymphoma in a first-degree relative (parent, sibling, or child), as well as exposure to certain pesticides or a diet high in meats and fats may also contribute.

Can lymphoma cancer be cured?

Today, cancer is not described as being cured because even when patients experience complete remission, they are at higher risk of have a recurrence. Treatment outcomes for lymphoma cancer vary by individual and the type and stage of the cancer at diagnosis. Survival rates for lymphoma and other blood cancers have significantly improved in the last 20 years. Three out of four people with lymphoma live five years or longer, according to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and that number may be going up based on newer, more effective therapies being developed.
