Providing Care for Patients Wanting to End Addictions to Drugs and Alcohol

The CNX Foundation Substance Recovery Unit is a CARF-accredited residential substance use disorder treatment facility by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). We provide the highest-level of critical care for addiction, alcohol and drug recovery. We use an evidence-based approach and uphold the highest standards in the field.

Our substance recovery unit is one-of-a-kind. The CNX Foundation Substance Recovery Unit is the only addiction recovery center in a four-county area in the southwestern region of Pennsylvania that provides care for people with substance use disorder who also have mental health or medical conditions.

Because our unit is located within Penn Highlands Mon Valley hospital, patients going through withdrawal have 24-hour access to the full resources of an acute-care hospital, including hospitalists, emergency medicine, cardiac care, medical imaging and lab testing. This allows us to safely support patients with co-occurring medical conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes or severe anxiety, and makes us the only ASAM Level 4.0 facility of our kind in Washington and Westmoreland counties.

Our unit also offers 3.7 Bio Medically enhanced care (ASAM Level 3.7), a first for Western Pennsylvania. This program provides around-the-clock nursing care and daily physician oversight for patients with more severe substance use and co-occurring medical needs.

The CNX Foundation Substance Recovery Unit has 14 private rooms, including two ADA rooms, group therapy rooms, an activity/dining room, a quiet activity room and a family interaction room. Half of our rooms are ligature-resistant, designed with patient safety in mind.

Each day, our multidisciplinary care teams meet to discuss each patient’s individualized substance recovery treatment plan to ensure all aspects of a patient’s health and well-being are being addressed. Our kind, highly-skilled team and safe, comfortable environment provide the support patients need to successfully withdraw from substances and begin their road to long-term recovery.

What Is Substance Use Disorder?

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a mental health condition that occurs when people struggle to control their chronic use of illegal drugs, prescriptions drugs, or alcohol despite the negative impact caused by use. No one chooses to become addicted to substances. Often, it starts with an injury or uncontrolled pain, a means to escape the pressures of work or life, or an underlying medical or mental health condition. Substance use disorder is treatable. With the right team, many people with substance use disorder are able to fully recover and reduce their risk of relapse.

What are the signs a person with an addiction needs help?

People with substance abuse disorder can exhibit a range of behaviors and symptoms. Common signs someone may need substance use disorder treatment include:

  • Confusion

  • Mood changes
  • Secretive behavior
  • Hostility
  • Decline in hygiene
  • Engaging in risky behavior
