What to Expect Your First Gynecological Appointment
From your first period throughout your lifetime, our Life's Journey OB/GYN physicians and team pledge to deliver the highest standard of gynecological care, in a comfortable, friendly environment.
Young women who are scheduling their first gynecologist appointment often have questions about what to expect. Common questions include:
When should I see a gynecologist for the first time?
If you are between the ages of 13 and 15, we recommend you schedule your first gynecologist appointment to meet and establish a relationship with your gynecology team.
Do I need a pelvic exam or pap smear if I am a virgin?
Typically, you will not receive a pelvic exam until you are 18 years old, unless you are experiencing pelvic pain, menstrual problems, or are sexually active.
Most health experts recommend having your first pap smear at age 21, even if you are not sexually active.
What will happen at my first OB/GYN appointment?
During your appointment, we encourage you to ask any questions you have regarding birth control options, how to protect from sexually transmitted diseases, and any other concerns. If, after you leave our office, you have additional questions, you can contact us via your MyPennHighlands account.
All patients, regardless of age, should be prepared to provide the following information at their first gynecologist appointment.
- Medical history
- Medications you are taking
- Details of menstrual cycle, including date and duration of last period
- Whether you are sexually active
Patients age 18 and over may have one or more of the following exams during their first gynecologist appointment.
- Pelvic exam
- Pap smear (21 and over)
- Breast exam
- HPV test (21 and over)
- Ultrasound
If you are age 18 or over, we recommend you schedule annual screenings and preventative services to maintain your reproductive health. After your first gynecologist visit, we will schedule a follow-up appointment and let you know when to expect any test results.
Our team provides you with the highest level of gynecology services, using the latest advances and techniques in women's healthcare. We look forward to serving you throughout every phase of your life.
