Outpatient Counseling
Also known as psychotherapy or talk therapy, outpatient counseling is about much more than simply talking. During outpatient counseling sessions, we teach you techniques to help you become more aware of negative or distorted thoughts and emotions so that you can counter them with more positive, effective responses. We provide individual and family therapy for children (starting at age 5) to seniors.
Medication Management
We provide psychiatric medication management at both Penn Highlands outpatient mental health locations. Through this service, we can prescribe or change mental health medications and then monitor to reduce side effects and maximize effectiveness. A full psychiatric evaluation is conducted during every new patient assessment.
Mental health medications are typically prescribed in addition to other treatments such as individual therapy, psychological assessments, nutrition counseling, exercise and other recreational therapeutic activities. Whether a physician has prescribed an anti-anxiety medication, anti-psychotic drug or another medication, careful management is important for both your physical and mental health. Medication management is also important if you want to stop taking a medication to avoid serious side effects.
Addiction Treatment
Penn Highlands offers outpatient treatment for patients addicted to substances, including opioids and alcohol, as well as behavioral addictions, such as gambling/gaming or pornography. Our outpatient addiction treatment is provided under the care of an addiction psychiatrist. We address addiction as well as any underlying mental health conditions, such as depression or anxiety.
For patients with opioid addiction or substance abuse disorder who need inpatient rehab, Penn Highlands Healthcare’s CNX Foundation Substance Recovery Unit at Penn Highlands Mon Valley is available.
Please note: Our addiction treatment program is not an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
At our Penn Highlands DuBois location, we provide structured Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid, cocaine, alcohol and tobacco addiction using medications like Suboxone, Zubsolv and FDA-approved alcohol medications in conjunction with addiction counseling.
Telehealth Behavioral Health Appointments
While we prefer to meet with patients in person, we understand some patients may live too far away or lack transportation. For these individuals, Penn Highlands offers limited virtual mental health visits. Also known as telehealth, virtual visits allow patients to connect with a therapist or physician through a computer, laptop or mobile device with a camera. Virtual mental health visits are available for ages 5+, teens, adults and seniors. Penn Highlands offers in-person tech support at rural health center locations for those without home internet access or who have trouble connecting to the virtual appointments.
