TRHN Medical Staff Awards Scholarships
The Tyrone Regional Health Network (TRHN) medical staff announced that they have awarded scholarships to Mr. Nicholas Light and Ms. Brianna Foy, students from Tyrone Area High School’s 2020 graduating class.
The Tyrone Regional Health Network medical staff awards a scholarship annually to one or more seniors at Tyrone Area High School (TAHS) who will pursue a health care profession.
Kishor Patel, M.D., president of the TRHN medical staff said “We are pleased to provide some support to local students who choose healthcare as a career path. Mr. Light, Ms. Foy and other students pursuing healthcare careers will be filling a very real need as members of the next generation of healthcare professionals.”
Mr. Light will study kinesiology at Penn State Altoona. “Thanks to the TRHN medical staff for this award. It is an honor to be chosen. This will go a long way and help me out financially when I start school in the fall,” said Mr. Light.
Mr. Light said his mother has worked in the healthcare field her entire life and that stirred his interest in healthcare. He joined the Health Occupations Technology Program his sophomore year. After two years of study in the program, he was then able to shadow during his third year. “Tyrone Hospital is a great facility,” said Mr. Light. “I had the honor of shadowing their rehabilitation therapy professionals and others.”
During high school, Mr. Light was a member of the National Honor Society. Extracurricular activities that Mr. Light participated in during high school included the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) and the TAHS baseball and cross-country teams.
His baseball team donated their time to clean-up the ball field and get everything ready for the season.
Ms. Foy will pursue a nursing career and will attend the University of Pittsburgh, Bradford.
“Thanks to the TRHN medical staff for choosing me for this scholarship, said Ms. Foy. “It will help me greatly for paying for college.”
Ms. Foy said her mother is a nurse. “I really look up to my mom and that inspired me to want to become a nurse.”
As part of her high school educational program Ms. Foy participated in the Health Occupations Technology Program. Part of her experience in the program included spending time at Tyrone Hospital working with and assisting hospital staff. “I enjoyed working in the emergency room with the nurses there, said Ms. Foy. “ ‘They were very helpful and I learned a lot.”
Ms. Foy was a member of the Health Occupation Students of America and the National Honor Society. Her extracurricular activities included volleyball and track and field.
