Penn Highlands Mon Valley Lights Up the Valley
Twelve years ago, when Mark Kirchner helped build the giant light switch that is used to light the holiday decorations on the campus of Penn Highlands Mon Valley on the annual Light-up Night, he had no idea that one day his grandson would be among the few children who are chosen to pull the switch. This year, for the 37th Annual Light-up Night held on December 4, 9-year-old Jase Kirchner was joined by 6-year-old Zaylee Lawson to do the much coveted honors.
The lucky youngsters were randomly selected in a drawing held to select two children or grandchildren of employees. Each employee is only permitted to submit one entry per child. Jase did have an advantage – both his grandfather and grandmother work at Penn Highlands Mon Valley. His grandmother, Karen Kirchner, is a clerk in the insurance office. The son of Mark and Lori Kirchner, of Perryopolis, Jase is a third-grade student at Frazier Elementary School. He enjoys playing baseball and basketball and online gaming. Jase also likes playing games with his 6-year-old sister, Joanna.
Kathi Kravets, a Unit Clerk on 6-West, and her husband, Lance, were delighted when their granddaughter Zaylee Lawson’s name was drawn. The daughter of Chelsey Kravets and Zachary Lawson, of Monessen, Zaylee is a first-grade student at St. Sebastian Regional Catholic School. She enjoys reading and playing with friends. Zaylee has a brother, Zachary and sister, Zachari.
The Light-up Night festivities began at 6:00 PM when Peter J. Adamo, Penn Highlands Southwest Regional President, welcomed the nearly 200 guests and thanked Joseph’s Nursery, from Monessen, for providing the interior and exterior decorations as well as for donating the special gifts that the children received. Appreciation also was expressed to the Penn Highlands Mon Valley Activities Committee for planning the event, as well as the hospital’s many employees, physicians and volunteers for the care they provide to the community.
Following Mr. Adamo’s remarks, the family-oriented event included the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus and treats for children. Complimentary hot cocoa and cookies were provided.
