Welcome, Charles H. Schafer, MD and Kevin Huang, MD
Penn Highlands Healthcare welcomes board-certified general surgeons Charles H. Schafer, MD, and Kevin Huang, MD, to its medical staff.
Dr. Schafer and Dr. Huang join the team at the Surgical Care Center, located at 820 Bryan Street, Suite 3 in Huntingdon.
Dr. Schafer has extensive experience and provides a broad range of treatments and procedures in General, Vascular, and Thoracic Surgery, including laparoscopic and open cholecystectomy and appendectomy (elective and emergent); complex ventral and inguinal hernia repairs; bowel resections for malignancy, obstruction, perforation, and inflammatory bowel disease; renal dialysis access fistula creation, revision and maintenance; permacath insertion and removal for initiation of hemodialysis; chest tube insertion and video-assisted thoracic surgery; mediport insertion for chemotherapy and immunotherapy; advanced treatment of diabetic foot wounds, including debridements and amputations, if necessary; vascular evaluations for peripheral vascular disease and diabetes, readily utilizing the radiology and cath lab services at Penn Highlands Huntingdon; and office excisions of skin lesions, cysts, and drainage of abscesses done in the Surgical Care Center providing the community with a low-cost alternative for providing these minor surgical procedures.

Dr. Schafer practiced as a clinical instructor in Surgery at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia and teamed up with his chief resident as an intern in surgery, and entered private practice as Barnaby/Schafer Surgical Associates for 30 years at a large community hospital in Philadelphia until coming to Penn Highlands Huntingdon for Weatherby Healthcare in 2018.
Dr. Schafer graduated from UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, N.J. He completed his internship and residency in general surgery at Hahnemann University Hospital. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Huang provides expert care for colon surgery, colonoscopy, hernia repair, removal of appendix, removal of gallbladder, treatment of skin cancer and other conditions.
“A general surgeon provides a broad range of diagnosis and treatments for conditions that are focused on, but not limited to, the abdomen. Many times, treatment may not require surgery,” Dr. Huang said.
Dr. Huang practiced at UPMC Susquehanna in Sunbury; Roswell Regional Hospital in Roswell, N.M.; Memorial Hospital of Salem County in Salem, N.J.; Lourdes Medical Associates in Camden, N.J.; ABQ Healthcare Partners in Albuquerque, N.M.; Atlantic Shore Surgical Associates in Brick, N.J.; Tennova General Surgery in Newport, Tenn.; and Virtua Surgical Group, P.A. in Marlton, N.J.
Dr. Huang graduated from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He underwent training in preliminary surgery at Mount Sinai School of Medicine Program in New York, N.Y. and completed his residency in categorical surgery at St. Joseph Mercy-Oakland Program in Pontiac, Mich. Huang is a member of the American College of Surgeons.
