Local Quilters Donate Blankets to Penn Highlands Elk

A group of people who enjoy quilting recently donated 30 blankets to Penn Highlands Elk. The blankets are given to babies and children who have to be transferred from the hospital for a higher level of care.

This project is organized by Tammy Cherry and Emily Snelick of Tangled Threads, a quilt and fabric store in downtown St. Marys. “People make quilts all year long,” explains Tammy, “and we ask them to bring them to the store by the first of April each year. Emmy and I each make a blanket, but there are lots of other people who make them, too.”

The staff at Penn Highlands Elk feels fortunate to be able to pass along these gifts to the patients. “This is so very thoughtful,” says Mary Ellen Smith, the chief nursing officer at the hospital. “It is overwhelming to me that someone would take the time it takes to make a quilt and donate that to our patients. We are continually blessed by the generosity of our community.”
