Breast Imaging at Penn Highlands Elk Receives Another Accreditation

The Imaging Center at Penn Highlands Elk has been recognized again for outstanding quality with a three-year accreditation in ultrasound. This comes as a result of an extensive review by the American College of Radiology. The accreditation is awarded by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Its gold seal represents the highest level of image clarity, staff qualifications, quality control procedures, and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting rigorous technical standards.

Lisa Redmond is the lead ultrasound sonographer whose extra effort led to the gold seal award. She explains what ultrasound is. “Ultrasound imaging, also known as sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of internal body parts to help physicians diagnose illness, injury or other medical problems.” Redmond’s team includes six general ultrasound technicians, as well as two echocardiography sonographers. They are all registered with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. “To prepare for the accreditation, we did 16 case studies to check for quality control,” explains Redmond. We studied different types of cases, including obstetrical, gynecological, arterial vascular, and liver.
