PH Brookville Student Scholarships Awarded
The Development Committee of Penn Highlands Brookville recently awarded $500 scholarships to four area high school students. This is the 13th year that this annual scholarship has been offered. Since 2003, fifty local students have benefited from this award. Applicants are awarded the scholarships based on academic excellence and their desire to pursue careers in the healthcare field, as well as high school and community involvement.
This year’s scholarships were awarded to one student from each area high school: Jordan Mealy of Brookville Area High School, Neel Daugherty-Shrivastava of Clarion-Limestone High School, Kami Beer of Redbank Valley High School and Selina Niner of East Forest High School.
Jordan Mealy is a graduate of Brookville Area High School and is the daughter of Rod Mealy and Jody Lucas. Mealy plans to pursue a degree as a physician. She will attend the University of Pittsburgh as she works towards this goal. As a high school student, she was very active in school activities. She was president of the Med Club and secretary of Spanish Club. She was a section leader of concert and marching band. She also was a member of National Honor Society as well as Math Club and Math Honor Society.
Neel Daugherty-Shrivastava is a graduate of Clarion Limestone High School and plans to become a physician. He began planning for this goal as a high school student and his plans will continue at University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He is the son of Brenda Daugherty and Himanshu Shrivastava. While in high school, he participated in United States Academic Decathlon, Science Olmpiad, Envirothon, student council, reading competition, Math Team and Foreign Language Club. He also was a member of the year book staff, National Honor Society, C-L Sensations, county and district choir and participated in the school musical his senior year. He was also the president and founder of the Chess Club and also founded the Red Cross Club his senior year. He also found time in his busy schedule to participate in varsity golf and varsity baseball.
Kami Beers graduated from Redbank Valley High School with a commitment to pursue a career as a registered nurse. Beers will work towards this goal at the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville. She is the daughter of Robert Sr. and Denise Beer of Mayport. While at Redbank Valley she was a member of the National Honor Society. She participated in band, powder-puff football and was a volunteer in the school and the community. She is also an employee at Trillium Pet Care.
Selina Niner is a graduate of East Forest High School and is the daughter of Betty Joe Miller of Marienville. Niner will attend Great Lakes Institute of Technology in Erie in pursuit of her plans to become a surgical technologist. While at East Forest High School she was a member of student council and student senate. She was also a cheerleader and participated in volleyball.
Each of these outstanding students received $500 toward their health care goals from the Penn Highlands Brookville Development Committee. “We are proud of them and their hard work and we are pleased to be able to make this annual presentation to the young people of our communities,” said Julie Peer, president of Penn Highlands Brookville. “We look forward to watching their futures unfold.”
“The Development Committee received many qualified applications for these four scholarships, and we would like to thank all students who took the time to apply” said Donna Haney of the Development Committee. “It is inspiring to see so many talented, hard-working students in our community planning to enter the healthcare field.”
