What is a Cataract?

A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye. The aging of the eye and the buildup of proteins in the lens cause cataracts. The buildup of proteins is what causes the cloudiness of the eye, which then affects one's vision. A cataract may not always affect vision but, most often, a person with a cataract has blurry or dimmed vision. Treatment for a cataract is not always necessary, especially if it is having a minimal impact to your vision. However, if your vision is significantly impacted and begins to interrupt your daily life, then it may be time to consider treatment options.

What Are the Symptoms?

Cataracts tend to develop slowly and progressively, causing a gradual and painless decrease in vision. You might also experience:

• Hazy/cloudy vision
• Blurry vision
• Difficulty seeing at night
• Sensitivity to light
• Halos around light sources
• Muted colors; hard to tell colors apart
• Rapid change in glasses prescription
